Agent in the vent

image001The most intriguing question in the furor generated by Newsweek’s supposed exposés of “gone-too-far” Israeli espionage is where the stories originate.

The answer might put the online magazine’s ongoing focus on this issue into context. It would be enlightening to learn whether a genuine senior American intelligence source actually exists, and, if so, whether that source acted on a personal initiative.

If this is more than a private peeve, it would be pertinent from our perspective to discover whether the source was directed by Obama Administration or State Department higher-ups to sling mud at Israel and sully it.

If so, this reaction would certainly constitute overkill opposition to freeing prospective Israeli tourists from US visa requirements. Pesky as the visas may be, they definitely shouldn’t be portrayed as a central Israeli interest for which it’s worth this country’s while to make a fuss and much less to make concessions. If fewer Israelis are attracted to the lures of America, so be it.

But if the shenanigans extend beyond mere visa irritations, we would of course need to consider what the objective of the possible highly-placed manipulators may be. They could plausibly be suspected of orchestrating attempts to blacken Israel’s reputation in Washington and perhaps cost it invaluable congressional support.

The key question, though, is whether any of this goes beyond the Newsweek newsroom. It’s not unheard-of in the world of journalism that rogue reporters, eager to make a name for themselves, attribute figments of their fertile imaginations to anonymous sources (i.e. Jayson Blair’s fraudulent dispatches in no less than The New York Times).

Conversely, indispensable sources often refuse to be identified (i.e. “deep throat” of Watergate fame) and it’s the reporter’s call whether or not to attribute credibility to what’s imparted.None of this is clear in this case and, under the guise of protecting sources, will probably never be clarified.

One fact is incontrovertible: the Newsweek story is hokum and that’s not just because of indignant denials from everyone in Israel who may remotely be in the know.

Jeff Stein’s account appears lifted directly from a shoddy Bond escapade parody. It describes an Israeli spy hiding in an air-conditioning duct above Al Gore’s Israeli hotel bathroom in 1998.

The source quoted in the article, purportedly an ex-Secret Service agent, says he saw “a guy starting to exit the vent into the room.” At that point, said agent coughed and “the guy went back into the vents.”

Not only would such a technique be exceptionally crude but whoever trumped up the tale surely didn’t bother to bone up on Israeli architecture. Newsweek’s story fails the most minimal test of believability foremost because whoever fabricated it failed to do elementary homework.

Our air ducts are nothing like their American counterparts. They tend to be narrow and full of paraphernalia geared to prevent the spread of flames and smoke from room to room. This is the situation at all the hotels in which Gore, other American political headliners and top-rank security personnel stayed. This is how it is now and how it was 16 years ago, during Gore’s visit to mark Israel’s 50th birthday.

The plain fact of the matter is that nobody can squeeze through an Israeli air-conditioning vent. This compelling bit of physical evidence in itself sufficiently discredits Newsweek’s account. If anything, it powerfully corroborates the heated denials of Israelis from diverse political orientations, ranging from ministers and all the way to former Military Intelligence chief Amos Yadlin.

Israel would be mad to tempt fate with spy capers, especially of the preposterous agent-in-the-vent variety and especially after the Pollard fiasco. Concomitantly, it would be naïve to suppose that there’s no American intelligence activity in Israel.

Most disturbing in this strange saga is the hypothetical scenario wherein Newsweek is being exploited in a non-too-subtle attempt to besmirch Israel. This likelihood gains impetus ahead of the American midterm elections this fall. Neither the FBI nor the CIA lack senior officials with axes to grind against Israel. We can only hope that such antagonism doesn’t extend higher in Washington’s hierarchy.

  1. Excellent article. The employment of truth and fiction is a concept of a bygone age.

I’m surprised we weren’t also accused of employing “Rosa Kleb” as well. Perhaps M orchestrated the whole saga.

Can you imagine the fantasies and tales we’ll be accused of when the USA finally legalises “the weed” in all States.

  2. That hoax story is just revenge for Israels “resistance” to Kerrys “peace” initiative.
    Oh well…

  3. As a state licensed air conditioning contractor I can personally attest that Honig’s assessment is accurate and not just for Israel. In strictly technical air conditioning terms, let’s just say that the Newsweek author and editorial staff are several ounces shy of a full charge.

But then there is that pesky question regarding how Newsweek came up with the idea including the conceptualization of the mechanics of the feat. From the authorizing antagonism demonstrated by both the Obama administration and the State Department, and the level of knowledge regarding Islam demonstrated by the FBI (Famous But Incompetent (thanks DS)) and the CIA, I would say they are all breathing the same air. I have come to expect nothing less.

  4. They’ve been watching old episodes of “Mission: Impossible”.

I guess you haven’t heard, Newsweek has been purchased by a company controlled by a religious cult. Their leader is David Jang, a controversial pastor from Korea who allegedly believes he is the second coming of Christ.

What he hopes to gain by attacking Israel is anyone’s guess. Like his fellow Korean, Rev Moon, he obviously aspires to political power.
