Another Tack: We’ve come a long way, Bibi

“There is no precedent of a conflict between nations being brought to finality without direct negotiations. In the conflict between the Arabs and Israel, the issue of direct negotiations goes to the very crux of the matter. Our objective is to achieve peace and coexistence but how will our neighbors ever be able to live with us in peace if they refuse to speak with us?”

The above is a direct quote from an address by prime minister Golda Meir to the Knesset on May 26, 1970, 40 years minus-five-days ago. The insistence on direct talks was cardinal for Israeli leaders before and since the above statement. A succession of foreign emissaries and politicos came and went, but Israel consistently recoiled from the notion of go-betweens and shuttle diplomacy.

The principle of direct talks steadfastly guided even the misguided progenitors of the Oslo folly – until the advent of Binyamin Netanyahu’s current term.

Decades of making one existentially risky concession after another existentially risky concession – of erasing one declaratively indelible red line after another, of drawing new “red lines” but deleting these in turn – have certainly paid off. We have gained so indubitably much. We’re so ahead of the starting line. At the beginning we wouldn’t hear of indirect negotiations. After we had yielded so much ground, we are at long overdue last engaged in – indirect negotiations. It was all really worth it. We’ve come a long way, Bibi!

TO BE fair, it’s not all his fault. Netanyahu inherited an unenviable legacy. The Osloites stealthily ushered another Arab Palestinian state into the original territory once designated as Palestine, some 80 percent of which is already Arab (even if it parades under the wholly artificial name of Jordan). This negated Golda’s stance that “Israel and Jordan were the two state-successors to the British Mandate. There is no room for a third… A Palestinian state between us and Jordan can only become a base to make it even more convenient to attack and destroy Israel.”

Ehud Barak, in his catastrophic stint as premier, established the ever-insidious model of total withdrawal back to the 1949 armistice lines. More recently Ehud Olmert, Barak’s challenger for the dubious distinction of worst-ever prime minister, additionally reinforced Barak’s precedent. This, coupled with Washington’s most antagonistic administration ever, left Netanyahu in dire circumstances and with powerful incentives to just please the hectoring censorious chorus out there.

Giving in is the easy thing to do. But true patriots, like Golda, summoned intestinal fortitude to avoid alluring facile solutions. If the experience of the past 40 years has taught us any lesson, it’s that buying time via “painful concessions” doesn’t work. Concessions become self-evidently the new square-one for ensuing haggling rounds.

History suffers no vacuums. Every retreat spawns yet another retreat, triggering a negative dynamic. Oslo elicited universal acceptance of a third state in original Palestine (the second Arab one), which forced Israel into increasingly defensive negotiating postures, culminating in Barak’s capitulation. Ariel Sharon subsequently expelled Jews and razed 25 veteran thriving settlements. Then, on paper, Olmert ceded most remaining settlements. The security fence was essentially moved to 1949’s Green Line.

Next (and this, significantly under Netanyahu) Israel froze Jewish construction in Judea and Samaria, implying in effect that it too acknowledges the settlements’ illegitimacy. But that still didn’t suffice. Each concession breeds another and thus Jerusalem was targeted and Jewish residence came under fire in a city which boasted a very massive Jewish majority since the first census was taken there early in the 19th century.

Bargaining, which we assumed was about agreed boundaries within territories we were forced to take in 1967, turned out to be about the 1949 line of exhaustion demarcated to end the War of Independence imposed on us. Beyond that lies an older Arab claim for the 1947 UN partition lines which Arabs rejected violently, thereby sparking that War of Independence. And before that raged the antebellum debate about whether any Jewish state ought to exist, which is what sparked that violent Arab opposition in 1947.

The same animus still foments Arab refusal to recognize Israel as a Jewish state or to forgo the “right” to inundate that Jewish state with untold millions of hostile Arabs who’ll destroy its continued existence as a Jewish state.

WHILE ISRAEL serially drew back from its positions to appease America and/or to coax Arabs into some modicum of accommodation, Arab orientations during all that time hadn’t budged a fraction of a millimeter. Their only modifications were tactical. Instead of eradicating Israel in one fell swoop (which they didn’t do only because they couldn’t), they settled on slicing Israel’s salami bit by bit to deprive it of strategic depth, render it more vulnerable to predations and erode it by demonization and demoralization. The basic premise remains that at most the existence of the unwanted “Zionist entity” is admitted temporarily de facto, that this entity must shrink and that Arabs have a right to deluge it.

Whenever we concede even a theoretical point, we imbue Arab obstructionism with an aura of righteous respectability in the (kangaroo) court of world opinion. We irreversibly undermine our own case.

That’s why it’s taken for granted internationally that Israel must be squeezed into the 1949 lines. Global discourse now dwells on whether there’s at all any justification for a Jewish state.

We have indeed come a long way – backward. By rushing recklessly headlong to resolve a conflict not of our making, we ended up returning to its very origins – the aspiration to eradicate the Jewish state.

As Golda stressed: “There is no obstacle to peace except for the Arab persistence in denying Israel’s very right to exist. Arab refusal to acquiesce in our existence in the Middle East, alongside the Arab states, abides. The only way to peace is through a change in that recalcitrance.”

It would further serve us to memorize what was emphasized at the Palestinian national assembly in July 1968: “Our basic aim is to liberate the land from the Mediterranean to the Jordan. We are not concerned with what happened in June 1967 or with eliminating the consequences of the June war. The Palestinian revolution’s basic concern is uprooting the Zionist entity.”

This, finally, takes us back to Golda’s May 26, 1970 speech: “The refusal to talk to us directly is damning evidence of the unwillingness of the Arab leaders to be reconciled with the very being of Israel.”

It was true then. The latest “proximity talks” underscore just how true it remains, especially when the supposed honest broker is taking sides.

Have we anything to show for four decades of regression from principles to which Golda adhered tenaciously? Not much if we judge by the fact that we’re now reduced to willingly enmeshing ourselves in the very trap we throughout wisely avoided.

  1. Israel has come a long,long way off course Was it that hard to stay on the road to life ? You’ve made an agreement with death and hell and there is no upright spine in Israel to end it.
    Bibi has proven that there is no one in political power capable of turning this disaster around…but it will be turned around with great pain for Israel.
    There was a much better way but you choose to listen to the well dressed and smiling snake oil salesmen from Washington instead.
    And Israel you still buy their poison after all the death and disaster they have brought.
    Israel,you’ve become insane for lies and agreements with hell and death.

    …for I will deliver the inhabitants of the land into your hand and you shall drive them out before you.
    You shall make no covenant with them or with their gods.
    Exodus 23

    Therefore hear the word of the Lord, you scoffers who rule this people in Jerusalem!
    …your covenant with death (ROAD MAP) shall be annulled, and your agreement with Sheol (the place of the dead)(ROAD MAP) shall not stand; when the overwhelming scourge passes through, then you will be trodden down by it.’
    As often as it passes through, it [the enemy’s scourge] will take you; for morning by morning will it pass through, by day and by night. And it will be utter terror merely to hear and comprehend the report and the message of it [but only hard treatment and dispersion will make you understand God’s instruction].
    Isaiah 28

  2. Sarah:

    What say you to Israel telling the world the following:

    “..the Jordanian and Palestinian peoples are the two most homogeneous and closest Arab peoples, given their ethnic, cultural and religious commonality. We are actually one people, as Arab clans on both sides of the River Jordan have one common ancestry.

    This indisputable fact should debunk all the myths about any proclaimed intrinsic distinctiveness, let alone contradictions, between Jordanians and Palestinians.

    It should also demolish all parochial ideologies such as territorial nationalism, namely exaggerated Palestinian and Jordanian nationalisms, ideologies that grow out of fanatical tribalism which Islam condemns as acts of Jahilyya or ignorance.”

    The only possible resolution of the issue of sovereignty in the West Bank must involve Israel and Jordan sitting down in direct negotiations to redraw the boundary between their two sovereign States. This is what Golda was saying.

    Let the job be finished in the 6% of former Palestine where it still remains unfulfilled.

  3. Direct Talks won’t help. Israel’s problem is there is none to judge the actions of Christianity and Islam, and Israel being judged by this Christo-Islamic duo will always spell disaster. Jews must confront a most blatant truth – now a blatant fact: Israel’s existence is a balistic affront to the Christo-Islamist block, and direct talks will not address this issue.

    Those who stole lands and genocided the natives throughout their histories, cannot judge Israel who has never done such things in all her 4000 year history – charging her of occupying 12% of the land allocated to her in the Balfour [80% stolen for Jordan; 8% for the West Bank & Gaza]. And the same land which was also the Jews’ historic motherland – from which she was barred by the same nes accusing Israel of their own crimes? The law says the statutory period is not applicable where robbery was perpetrated with violence and murder. Direct talks will not address such issues.

    Those who dumped the name Palestinean on the Jewish homeland of Judea – and have recently re-dumped this name on those declaring Israel’s destruction – is a crime and a falsehood. Direct talks won’t address such issues.

    Those who carved off 80% of the land allocated to the Jews are accusing Jews of illegally occupying 12% of that same land. Direct talks will not address such issues.

    Those who made Heil Hitler salutes at the UN for an immoral 2-state via Jordan – are raising their hands again at the UN and calling a death-to-Jews 3-state as a 2-state. Direct talks won’t address such anti-semitic Arithmatic.

    But the Jews have a way to save Humanity – by first saving themselves: whatever is done to Jews will be done to others. This makes it obligatory for Jews to save humanity. The Jews must accept nothing less than the restoration of the Balfour – a totally illegal, immoral and never called for attrocity against the Jews when they were most helpless following W.W.II. This will also save India – by restoring Pakistan and Bangladesh back to the Indian people – land stolen the same way as was Jordan, Hebron, Gaza stolen from the Jews. Nor will this robbery ever cease if not confronted: the demand for Kashmir & East Jerusalem affirms it.

    Further, the Jews must demand a Nuremberg II Trial of the executive heads of Christianity and Islam – including their religious leaders, their kings and queens, their politicians [both active and still alive], their media, their actors and their artists. This is a treacherous lot parading as judges of their victims: yesterday’s European Holocaustians have enjoined themselves with the Islamist Wanna-Be Holocaustians – a Klu Klax Klan where Jews are the enemy.

    How can such an impossible task be overtaken? Very easily! First by undertaking a Superpeme Court crawl – based on law and facts – deriving judgements of the illegality and crimes perpetrated by Christo-Islamist deeds post Holocaust – a step by step process. This will expose the UN Madarasa, the EU and the Islamic Regimes of their crimes. And this should be done not in direct talks – but in the open with all the world privy to the actions in the world’s supreme court deliberations.

    If the Jews, commanded to be a light unto the nations, do not want to do this for themselves – then they should consider doing so for humanity.

    Challenging a 3-state as a 2-state is a death trap for Israel – it not only sanctions the first 2-state, but also sanctions serial 2-states still to come – till there is none. Be assured in the near future there will be demands for a 4-state [presented as a 2-state again], and the Christo-Islamic duo will invent Muslim Zionists being apartheided by the Jews. The precedence factor will make it happen and Jews will no doubt demand direct talks to address the 4-state demand and the apartheided Muslim Zionist persecutions. Sounds familiar?

  4. Let us not to the marriage of true minds admit impediments. The aspiration to eradicate the Jewish state has never wavered, not for a moment, whether in the hearts of Israel’s enemies without, or in the hearts of her enemies within. O no, it is an ever-fixed mark, and they, like lovers, twin birds that share a wing, twin trees with branches intertwined. It’s sickening.

  5. Little insignificant assuming men plan and God laughs,as the updated old Yiddish saying goes.
    It seems the tried and tested wisdom of the old sages has been thrown out for modern day madness Israel has embraced but God will get His people back on the road He has chosen for Israel.
    His plan is to use Israel as His weapon of war against His and Israel’s enemies.
    Don’t believe the false prophets,the liars of our day, peace with Islam is impossible.
    All the evil restraint applied to Israel by the U.S. will end since Israel is here to survive and thrive.
    The same is not true for America Babylon which weakened and restrained naive,gullible Israel under the ruse of peace.

    ‘Washington’s uneven and inconsistent approach to Iran and Syria make naught of the protestations made by President Obama and other US officials of their unshakeable commitment to Israel’s security.’
    For the day of the LORD is near upon all the heathen (Israel’s enemies including the US,EU,UN): as thou hast done, it shall be done unto thee: thy reward shall return upon thine own head.
    Obadiah 15
    (America) Babylon has been a golden cup in the hand of the LORD,
    Intoxicating all the earth
    The nations have drunk of her wine;
    Therefore the nations are mad.

    Suddenly (America)Babylon has fallen and been broken;
    Wail over her!
    Bring balm for her pain;
    Perhaps she may be healed.
    We applied healing to Babylon, but she was not healed;
    Forsake her and let us each go to his own country,
    For her judgment has reached to heaven

    Sharpen the arrows, fill the quivers!
    The LORD has aroused the spirit of the kings of the Medes,
    Because His purpose is against Babylon to destroy it;
    For it is the vengeance of the LORD, vengeance for His temple.

    All mankind is stupid, devoid of knowledge;

    Every goldsmith is put to shame by his idols,
    For his molten images are deceitful,
    And there is no breath in them.
    They are worthless, a work of mockery;
    In the time of their punishment they will perish.
    The portion of Jacob is not like these;
    For the Maker of all is He,
    And of the tribe of His inheritance;
    The LORD of hosts is His name.
    He says, “You are My war-club, My weapon of war;
    And with you I shatter nations,
    And with you I destroy kingdoms.
    “With you I shatter the horse and his rider,
    And with you I shatter the chariot and its rider,
    And with you I shatter man and woman,
    And with you I shatter old man and youth,
    And with you I shatter young man and virgin,
    nd with you I shatter the shepherd and his flock,
    And with you I shatter the farmer and his team,
    And with you I shatter governors and prefects.
    Jeremiah 51

  6. True, Golda Meir was a true Israeli and Jewish patriot. Golda was also prescient, having realized how dangerous, corrupt and irresponsible Shimon Peres and Ariel Sharon were long before either one of them became her successors as prime minister. Regarding David Singer’s comment, Golda said in her interview with Oriana Fallaci that she would not be opposed to giving up part of the West Bank in exchange for a peace treaty with Jordan, but she would never agree to give up control of any Jewish holy sites or of the Jordan Valley or Judean Hills. However, after holding secret talks with King Hussein of Jordan in the early 1970s, after Israel helped prevent Syria from invading Jordan during Black September 1970, Golda came to the conclusion that King Hussein and other Arab leaders were interested only in weakening Israel, not living in peace with Israel. Golda also referred to Yasser Arafat as an “arch-terrorist” with whom she would never sit down. She must have been turning over in her grave when Yitzhak Rabin not only shook Arafat’s hand and allowed him to amass an army of trained killers in Israel’s heartland, but in December 1993, during a ceremony marking the 15th anniversary of Golda’s passing, said that in doing so, he was following Golda’s commitment to pursuing peace!

  7. Josh

    Looks like Golda’s views are set for a re-run as the “two-state” solution sinks slowly into the sunset.

    Imagine all the death trauma and suffering on both sides that could have been avoided if Golda’s pragmatic ideas had been adopted.

  8. The Insane Nation of Israel

    Would the South Koreans still consider the United States an ally:
    if the United States insisted that any South Korean response did not escalate the situation and demanded that any military response was out of the question;
    if the Unites States demanded that the South Korean Navy cease patrolling the northern limit areas;
    if the United States demanded negotiations with prior consessions be given to North Korea;
    if the United States supported North Korean territorial claims against South Korea and that part of Seoul be made into a North Korean capital;
    if the Unites States funded, trained, and equipped elements of the North Korean military with the full expectation that if negotiations failed within two years that those armed and trained soldiers would fight the South Koreans;
    if the United States threatened to passively support U.N. resolutions that were against South Korea unless South Korea submitted to U.S. interests directly against her own;
    if the United States intervened in and vigourously protested routine even bureaucratic processes of the South Korean government for the benefit of North Koreans;
    if any aid to South Korea was delayed and impounded and made contingent on concessions to North Korea;
    if the United States encouraged China and Russia in not only in supporting North Korea’s intransigence but coordinated with them in pressuring South Korea;
    if the United States touted Kim Jong Il as a true peacemaker and humanitarian;
    and if the South Korean Prime Minister was insulted in the worst possible way while visiting the White House?
    I don’t think so.
    The United States is an enemy of Israel.
    (and you shitty Americans don’t tell me that you’re not, what you think doesn’t matter).

    Steve Israel

    Steve ,

    Why do you work to steal the fantasy and delusions of the idol worshipers of Israel ?
    You disparge and impune their god.
    How dare you offend them with the truth.
    You should keep to fairy tales because that is what Israel loves to hear.
    They hate the truth and you are in danger of being stoned to death by the devoute heathen of Israel who go along with national suicide for lies of peace.
    Haven’t you learned anything from Bibi,Ehud 1 and 2,Shimon,Livni and the ruling gang of kneepad worshippers of America Babylon ?

    Lo Shalom without God,
